CHAPTER TWELVE
Cam rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands to little effect. They still burned and itched from lack of sleep.
As he sat on the tailgate of his truck watching the eastern horizon pinken, fatigue and frustration pulled at his shoulder muscles. As if sleeping in the bed of a truck wasn’t bad enough, he’d tossed and turned all night, unable to ignore the realization that Amanda slept only a few feet away. Every time he’d closed his eyes, a vision of her bright hair and mesmerizing eyes had materialized against his eyelids.
The feel of her lips and body against his made him punch his pillow more than once. It’d been awhile since he’d had sex, and his body was begging him to cure that situation. But this was different. Amanda had burrowed her way into his heart, no matter how insane that sounded. He wasn’t exactly sure how he felt about her, but the thought of one-time sex didn’t begin to satisfy him.
And despite her sometimes sharp tongue, Amanda was skittish inside. She’d warmed to his kisses, but there still existed a hesitance, a restraint just beneath the surface. Amanda Perry wasn’t used to letting go, and he swore to find out why. Did it have to do with those damned rings on her finger? He needed to know what he was getting into, but every time he was within five feet of Amanda, he seemed to lose every shred of common sense he had.
Cam looked toward the house, its windows still dark. Had she been able to sleep any better than he had? Even though she’d assured him otherwise, had she been able to rest knowing he was outside watching over her?
He scanned the gradually lightening landscape. Who out there wanted to frighten Amanda? Granted, she’d angered a good many people, him included, but harassment and arson were inexcusable responses. She might be right — that someone only wanted to make a point. But he couldn’t take the chance that the burned outbuilding was the last and worst attack. The thought of someone setting fire to the house while Amanda slept sent a frigid shudder through his gut.
He glanced back at the house again. He’d never felt this way before, like some medieval, chain mail-wearing knight protecting the fair damsel in distress. The image made him chuckle. Amanda might look like a fairy, but she possessed an iron will and a nasty baseball bat. Not to mention a big, intimidating dog that no doubt could go from tender-hearted pooch to ferocious beast if she thought Amanda was in danger.
The birds began to twitter, heralding a new day. He stood and stretched his aching muscles. What he wouldn’t give for a night’s sleep in a real bed. Amanda’s bed.
No. If he ended up in Amanda’s bed, he was sure he wouldn’t get a wink of sleep. If that occurred, sleep could definitely wait.
He should head back to his own property and get to work, but he didn’t want to leave her.
